Question:

I contacted Nutrabay company regarding the halal status of their products, specifically the rennet used in their whey, whether it is obtained from a halal source. I received a response from their site’s authenticated email ID: ‘Thank you for your detailed question regarding your whey protein and the source of the rennet. We truly appreciate your awareness and caution. We would like to inform you that the raw materials used in our whey protein, including the rennet involved in this process, are halal certified. You can confidently choose either whey protein isolate or concentrate, as both meet the required standards.’ My question is: can I consider their products halal and use them based solely on their email confirmation? Because they acknowledged my detailed question and confirmed that their products are halal!

Answer:

The confirmation provided by the company via an official email that their raw materials and rennet are “halal certified” will be considered sufficient for Shariah compliance, provided you do not have any strong suspicion or evidence to the contrary regarding the truthfulness of their statement. Therefore, you may use this product.

For details, read the full response:

This issue has two aspects:
1. The Shariah ruling on “rennet” (cheese rennet)
2. The ruling on trusting a company’s news or confirmation

Shariah Ruling on Rennet (in Light of Hanafi Fiqh):

According to Hanafi fiqh, if rennet is obtained from the stomach of a halal animal (e.g., cow, calf) that was not slaughtered (i.e., is carrion), it is still considered pure (tahir) in itself according to Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him), because it does not possess life (soul). However, rennet from a pig is unanimously haram and impure. In the present era, three types of rennet are common: animal, vegetable, and microbial. If the company claims that their rennet is “halal certified,” this means it is either vegetable/microbial or obtained from a halal animal slaughtered according to Shariah.

Reference: “There is a difference of opinion among Hanafi jurists regarding rennet; according to Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him), the rennet of a carrion animal (provided it is a halal animal) is pure… and the fatwa is based on this.” (Derived from: Fatawa Alamgiri, Vol. 1, p. 43 / Bada’i al-Sana’i, Vol. 1, p. 63)

Trusting the Company’s Confirmation and News:

The Shariah principle is that in matters of halal and haram, if a Muslim or any company about which the predominant assumption is that it is not lying or is certified by reliable authorities, reports that something is halal, it can be relied upon. When the company has formally confirmed via email that it is “halal certified,” as long as no clear evidence to the contrary (e.g., a laboratory report or denial by a credible body) emerges, their statement will be accepted as correct.

According to a fatwa from Darul Ifta, Jamia Uloom Islamia Banuri Town: “If it becomes definitively known that a product contains haram ingredients, then consuming it will be impermissible, but as long as there is no definitive knowledge of the inclusion of a haram ingredient, it cannot be called impermissible or haram to eat; if someone exercises caution based on doubt, that is another matter.”
