Question:
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu
My marriage has been 6 years, I want to take khula. My husband is impotent and also has a psychological problem. We tried many treatments but no benefit. I was performing istikhara for khula, then one night I saw in a dream Hafiz Muqtadir Qureshi (to whom we have taken bayah) came and called me with a hand gesture and said to me and my husband that you both perform nikah in the water of the haud (he said water of the haud or something else, I don’t remember this part well) then my sleep broke and I sat up around 4-4:30. As I sat up, I heard a dog’s sound from somewhere outside the house. Please tell me why such a dream came and what should I do. Jazakallah Khair.
Answer:
Bismillah Alhamdulillah, All praise is due to Allah, Who taught humankind the landmarks of religion and bestowed upon them the realities of Sharia and strength
Wa Alaikum Assalam Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu
You want to know about the interpretation of the dream you saw after reflecting on your marital problems and performing istikhara regarding khula. You also want to know what you should do in this situation.
Dream Interpretation
We do not have knowledge about Hafiz Muqtadir Qureshi, who this honorable person is. However, if they are one who adheres to the Shariah (i.e., their life and apparent actions are in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah), then their appearance in the dream and calling you both for a nikah may indicate that you, husband and wife, should remove any shortcomings, mistakes, or misunderstandings, whether voluntary or involuntary, from your respective sides. The meaning of doing nikah while already in a marriage could be this. The mention of water of the haud in the dream may be a symbol of purity and a new beginning. However, the interpretation of a dream depends on the state of the dreamer and other details.
The sound of a dog sometimes relates to danger or worry, but it could also be merely a coincidence.
What is the Definite Meaning of the Dream?
It is not correct to give a definite interpretation of any dream. In Shariah, a dream does not serve as a permanent proof for making a decision, because a dream may sometimes come from one’s own thoughts, sometimes from satanic whispers, and sometimes as glad tidings from Allah; the definite distinction among these is not possible for everyone. Respected muftis and great jurists have also mentioned this principle that dreams are not proof or evidence, therefore no binding and definite decision should be made based on a dream.
Since you were continuously thinking about khula, treatment, pain, marriage, separation, and istikhara, they were all on your mind; therefore, the dream may be an effect of this mental state. The appearance of a pious person/sheikh in the dream does not necessarily mean that you have become obligated to stay or separate according to that dream.
Shariah Guidance Regarding Khula
If the husband is impotent and despite treatment there is no benefit, and due to this marital relations cannot be established, then it is permissible for the woman to take khula. In the case of khula, the woman can terminate the marriage by giving some compensation to the husband.
In Istikhara, the Essential Thing is Not a Dream, But the Inclination of the Heart and Contentment
The meaning of istikhara is to ask Allah for what is good. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught istikhara, but its necessary result is not a dream. The istikhara dua and method are authentically proven from Hadrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih Bukhari. Seeing a dream after istikhara does not necessarily mean that you should not take khula. The purpose of istikhara is to ask Allah for the best, and whatever decision gives your heart peace and you are content with it, that is better.
Practical Advice
- Do not make any decision based on the dream, but act according to Shariah principles.
- If you intend to take khula, then refer to an Islamic court or a mufti for it.
- If you want to know the interpretation, then consult a specialized dream interpreter (one who knows dream interpretation); we do not have such a specialist dream interpreter here. Remember, the interpretation of a dream depends on many details.
