Islamic ruling on using a mobile phone bought with interest (riba) money for Qur’an and worship

Islamic Ruling on Items Purchased with Interest Money

Question:

I want to share something openly. At present, I am going through severe financial hardship, living almost like a poor man. But some time ago, I bought a mobile phone with money that came from interest. Through this phone, I recite the Qur’an, watch prayer times, learn supplications, and use it mostly for acts of worship.
Now my situation has become so difficult that I have nothing left financially. In this condition, what is the Islamic ruling regarding this mobile phone and its usage? Will my acts of worship still be accepted?

Answer:

With praise to Allah, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and affirming submission (to Allah).

Islamic Ruling About Interest & Using Interest Money

In Short, You Should Remember That:

  • The mobile phone itself is not haram.
  • Using it for Islamic purposes is permissible.
  • Your worship is accepted based on your sincerity.
  • Repent sincerely for the past interest transaction.
  • Avoid Riba completely in the future.

Complete & Detailed Answer:

In Islamic law, interest (riba) is a major sin. The Qur’an and Sunnah contain extremely severe warnings against it. Allah declares war on those who deal with riba:

“If you do not give up riba, then be informed of a war from Allah and His Messenger.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:279)

However, scholars have clarified that if someone purchases an item using money that came from interest, the sin is in the transaction — not in the item itself. The item itself does not become “haram in essence.”

Imam Al-Sarakhsi writes:

“If someone buys something with riba money, the item itself is permissible after the contract; the sin is in the riba, not in the thing purchased.” (Al-Mabsut, vol. 14, p. 28)

Therefore, the mobile phone you bought is not haram in itself. You may continue using it for lawful and religious purposes. However, the original act of taking or giving interest remains sinful. You should perform sincere tawbah (repentance) by feeling remorse, seeking Allah’s forgiveness, and firmly resolving never to repeat the act.

Acceptance of Acts of Worship:

The validity and acceptance of worship depend on your intention (niyyah) and sincerity, not on the device you use. As long as your worship is done with a sincere heart, your Qur’an recitation, prayers, and duas through this phone are valid and accepted, in shaa’ Allah.

Financial Hardship and the Effects of Riba:

The Qur’an and Sunnah clearly state that riba destroys blessings:

“Allah destroys riba and increases charity.” (Al-Baqarah 2:276)

“If you do not give up riba, then take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger.” (Al-Baqarah 2:279)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No one increases his wealth through riba except that the end result will be loss.” (Ibn Majah: 2279)

So your financial hardship may well be connected to the negative spiritual effects of interest. The way forward is sincere repentance, staying away from riba completely, and turning to Allah with consistent du’a and charity.
