Islamic Ruling on the Figurative Use of the Word “Magic”

Question:

I used a pc version of editing tool on their web site, I spent dozens of hours last few weeks designing my book (with no haram content and images of living creatures). And I downloaded the file. When the file was downloading it showed “we are preparing your design”. But when I used mobile app version of the editing tool, when I was downloading the same file it showed with “we are preparing your design” a comment to the process which says something like “let magic happen”. But here is the catch, in app version if I download the file externally (without entering the file) through my page on app, the downloading process doesn’t have such comment, the app only shows the comment when I download the file internally (after entering the file). Nowadays it’s common in west to say word magic as a figure of speech. So my question is can I use this book for my work if I downloaded the file through pc version, which doesn’t have the comment during the process of download?

Answer:

With praise to Allah, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and affirming submission (to Allah).

In Brief, Please Note:

  • In Islamic law, magic (sihr) is a prohibited act and belief, not merely a word.

  • The word “magic” as commonly used today is meant in a linguistic and figurative sense.

  • Such figurative or idiomatic usage does not entail any Shar‘i prohibition.

  • Therefore, your book and its use are permissible and valid.

What Is Magic (Sihr)?

In Islamic terminology, magic (sihr) refers to an act in which:

  • Assistance is sought from devils or jinn,
  • Specific spells, rituals, or unlawful methods are used,
  • People’s minds, perception, bodies, or circumstances are affected,
  • And such effects are believed to result from hidden or supernatural means.

Why Is Magic Forbidden in Islam?

Magic is prohibited because:

  • It often involves association with and obedience to devils,

  • It contradicts reliance upon Allah (tawakkul),

  • It includes harming, deceiving, and misleading people,

  • And in many cases, it leads to disbelief (kufr).

What Is Meant by the Word “Magic” in Common Usage?

In contemporary common usage—especially in Western societies and technological contexts—the word “magic” is often not used in its true Shariah sense, but rather to describe:

  • Something unusual or extraordinary,

  • Something that causes amazement or surprise,

  • A fast, effective, or impressive process,

  • Or simply a figurative expression (figure of speech).

This is purely a linguistic and metaphorical usage. It has no connection with real magic, Nor with devils, occult practices, or any unlawful belief.

When a word leaves its original literal meaning and becomes widely known for a figurative meaning in common usage, its ruling follows that commonly understood meaning. (Except the Except for words of disbelief – that is, words that, even by simply uttering them, make a person a disbeliever.)

The Shariah Ruling on the Appearance of the Word “Magic”

In your case:

  • No actual magic was performed,

  • No belief in magic was held,

  • No intention or purpose of magic existed,

  • No teaching or promotion of magic took place.

Rather, a phrase containing the word “magic” appeared only as a figurative expression within a software interface, intended merely to describe an impressive or automated process.

Therefore, from a Shar‘i perspective, it makes no difference whether the file is downloaded from a place where this word appears, or from a place where it does not.

This is because Islamic law considers reality and purpose, not the mere presence or absence of a word such as “magic,” when determining sin or permissibility.

ALLAH knows best and most accurately

For a Muslim man or woman to leave Islam, meaning to become an apostate, is such a grave sin that if he or she dies without repentance, they will go directly to Hell. Whether the reason for leaving Islam is mental confusion (psychological pressure and stress), difficult circumstances, or any other such reasons that led them to abandon Islam, no excuse of this kind is acceptable before Allah. There are clear verses of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, and the consensus of the Ummah (the agreement of the scholars of the entire Muslim community) on this matter.
