For a Muslim man or woman to leave Islam, meaning to become an apostate, is such a grave sin that if he or she dies without repentance, they will go directly to Hell. Whether the reason for leaving Islam is mental confusion (psychological pressure and stress), difficult circumstances, or any other such reasons that led them to abandon Islam, no excuse of this kind is acceptable before Allah. There are clear verses of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, and the consensus of the Ummah (the agreement of the scholars of the entire Muslim community) on this matter. For details, read the complete answer below.

Is it certain that a person who leaves Islam (an apostate) will go to Hell?

Question:

I am muslim right now but I want to ask that if I leave islam due to hurt and associate danger and hurt from it, feels confused as there are so many religons, and I am not feeling peace… And becomes non mulsim…. And never returns to islam… Dies as non muslim… Will I directly go to hell or will it be between me and allah, he can understand me and forgive me and can send to heaven if islam is true as he knows my situation and gave me abondadment from childhood and hurt. I am scared of hell so please guide me.. I asked one mufti, mufti zayd, he said it will be fine, I can be forgiven, I want to reconfirm.

Answer:

With praise to Allah, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and affirming submission (to Allah).

A brief answer regarding apostasy (deviation from Islam)

In Short, You Should Remember That:

For a Muslim man or woman to leave Islam, meaning to become an apostate, is such a grave sin that if he or she dies without repentance, they will go directly to Hell. Whether the reason for leaving Islam is mental confusion (psychological pressure and stress), difficult circumstances, or any other such reasons that led them to abandon Islam, no excuse of this kind is acceptable before Allah. There are clear verses of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, and the consensus of the Ummah (the agreement of the scholars of the entire Muslim community) on this matter. For details, read the complete answer below.

The Seriousness of Apostasy (Turning Away from the Religion of Islam)

Allah Almighty’s mercy upon His servants is vast and limitless. Because of this mercy, Allah sent His Prophets (peace be upon them) to guide humanity and showed us the path of guidance. Even after this, if a person abandons the path shown by Allah and chooses another way, and becomes an apostate from Islam, then this is such a serious crime that Allah has clearly stated about the one who dies without seeking forgiveness:

“And whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies while he is a disbeliever—then their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and they are the people of the Fire. They will remain in it forever.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 217)

From this, it becomes clear that whoever dies in a state of disbelief—no matter who they are—will enter Hell and will remain there forever. Allah Almighty has clearly declared this. Therefore, thinking that Allah’s mercy means that He will also remove disbelievers from Hell goes against the law established by Allah Himself.

The Ruling on Apostasy in Islamic Jurisprudency According to Classical Authentic Books

It is clearly stated regarding an apostate that if he does not repent and dies in a state of disbelief, then his destination is Hell. (Book: Al-Hidayah)

“If an apostate dies upon disbelief, then he is among the people of Hell.” (Reference: Fatawa Hindiyyah / Al-‘Alamgiriyyah, V2)

This matter is unanimously accepted in the fatwas of Darul Uloom Deoband, Darul Ifta Karachi, Jamia Binoria Town, and other reliable religious institutions.

Apostasy is among the gravest major sins. If death occurs in a state of disbelief, the clear Islamic ruling is Hell. For such a person, even supplication for forgiveness is not permitted.

The Ruling on Apostasy in Your Situation (Leaving the Religion of Islam)

If, due to mental distress, financial hardship, or other hardships and sufferings, a person only experiences thoughts and doubts within the mind, then Allah Almighty does not hold them accountable for this. That is, if because of these difficulties a person sometimes becomes hopeless and, God forbid, wrong thoughts about Allah arise—such as: “Why has Allah left us alone?” or even doubts that reach the level of disbelief—Islamic law does not declare such a person a disbeliever or apostate, as long as these thoughts are not accepted in the heart or expressed verbally. Nor will such a person be held accountable for them, God willing. (In’Sha ALLAH)

However, if someone, while under such pressure and in that state, consciously utters such words with awareness, or firmly believes in them in the heart, then in that case, due to the loss of the essential pillars of faith—inner affirmation and verbal confession—faith will be lost. Such a person becomes an apostate and a disbeliever, and if he dies in that state, he will go to Hell forever.

Allah’s mercy is vast, but this mercy is general in this world and reaches every disbeliever and believer alike. In the Hereafter, however, it will be granted only to the believers. This is clearly proven from the Qur’an and Hadith.

However, the ruling is different for a person who is insane, mentally impaired, or unconscious in such a way that their mind is not functioning at that time.

What Should a Person Do If They Have Become an Apostate or Intend to Leave Islam?

A person who has left Islam or has formed the intention to leave it should:

  1. First and foremost repent for this action. Repentance means, first of all, to completely abandon this intention and give it up.
  2. If the person has already become an apostate, then they should immediately recite the Kalimah Tayyibah—“La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur Rasulullah”—with understanding of its meaning, and renew their faith by affirming the essential beliefs of Islam.
  3. If the person was married, then renewing the marriage (nikah) is necessary, because apostasy invalidates the marriage.
  4. If the person has the financial ability for Hajj, then even if they had performed Hajj before apostasy, it was nullified due to apostasy, so they must perform Hajj again.
  5. He should make every effort to remove the causes that previously led to apostasy.
    a) If there was any mental illness, he should consult a good psychologist or doctor.
    b) If there were doubts or objections about Islam—  whether created in their own mind or taught by someone through lectures, social media, or the internet—then he should remove these objections from his mind. However, for future protection and learning, he should seek guidance from a qualified religious scholar.
  6. He should stay away from all factors that could lead to apostasy in the future, such as learning religion from unreliable people, or unnecessarily applying personal reasoning to matters that are clearly explained in the Qur’an and Hadith, such as the nature of Allah, Paradise and Hell, and the punishment of the grave.
  7. He should continue making supplications and ask Allah for steadfastness and consistency in faith.
  8. He should keep the company of righteous people and scholars, because the Prophet ﷺ said:
“A person follows the religion of his close friend.”
So, the company of righteous people will make you righteous, while the company of disbelievers and sinners will make one a disbeliever and a sinner.
